Practice Summary

Rhys Tanner is a serving officer in the Royal Navy, undertaking a criminal law pupillage.

After graduating from Durham University with a BA(Hons)in Politics, he commenced initial officer training at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, in 2016. Rhys qualified as a Logistics Officer following specialist training at HMS RALEIGH, in Torpoint, and on board HMS SUTHERLAND, based within HMNB Devonport.

He moved to the local area in 2018, assuming the role of Disciplinary Casework Officer at HMS DRAKE, where he managed Summary Hearings, Service Complaints and Courts Martial administration. Subsequent assignments to MOD Abbey Wood in Bristol, Fishery Protection Squadron in HMNB Portsmouth and as the Logistics Officer of HMS SPEY saw him further act as the Command Legal Advisor. Prior to selection for Navy Legal training, he was appointed as head of the Logistics Department on board an Offshore Patrol Vessel, deploying on operations in the Pacific Ocean.

Rhys undertook the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Bar Practice Course at the University of Law, London. He is a member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple.

Upon completion of pupillage at KBG Chambers in 2026,Rhys will return to the Royal Navy as a Naval Barrister, prosecuting and defending in the Courts Martial, advising on Summary Hearings, providing operational legal advice, and working in other areas of criminal, international, and employment law.
